However, it's a new dawn, it's a new day, because the public no longer has to live in constant fear of cookie dough-induced salmonella. Why? Ben & Jerry's - the brand that claims to have invented chocolate chip cookie dough ice cream - created snackable bags of raw chunks that are perfectly safe to eat, including one that's completely vegan.

Ben & Jerry's Cookie Dough Chunks will debut in stores throughout April. They come in three flavors including peanut butter chocolate chip cookie dough and certified vegan and non-vegan chocolate chip cookie dough. Each variety comes in a half-pound bag with eight servings of the exact same dough found in Ben & Jerry's ice cream. Unlike regular dough, these are OK to eat because they're made with pasteurized eggs and heat-treated flour.
"Fans have been asking for 'just the chunks' for a while now," the brand's innovation manager Jody Eley said in a statement. "During a short market test in Vermont last summer, fans snatched up the dough in record time. Bags flew off the shelves in mere days, and stores could not keep the delicious dough bites in stock! Now, Ben & Jerry's is rollin' out the dough to fans across the U.S."
Cookie Dough Chunks will be available at participating retailers nationwide, online and in Ben & Jerry's Scoop Shops in April for a recommended retail price of $4.99 per bag. Pro tip: These precious doughy dollops need to be kept in the freezer. If you leave them out too long, they'll stick to one another and form a giant cookie dough wad, which actually doesn't sound that bad in retrospect. That monster goodie would certainly rival the best cookie in every state.
