Forrest G. Averill School Reviews

I am a parent of a Kindergarden student in Ms. Miller's class. I couldn't ask for a better teacher for my child. My son thrives in Ms. Miller's classroom. He has been through so much change in the last year and had some behavioral problems that have been pretty much taken care of. I believe that if my son had gotten any other teacher he would not be thriving the way that he is. I am kind of irate about the Administrator in the school. The Administrator is not supportive of the teachers there at all. Our voices are not being heard on the end of the Administrator. We understand that not all of our concerns are going to be changed, but they do need to be addressed. At this point we are only being brought in to voice our opinions after a decision has already been made. WRONG!

Parent involvement is not encouraged, especially if identified with special needs. Some of the tenured staff is not willing to try different teaching styles that would encourage mainstreaming. Resource room is more like a separate/independent study instead of being supplemental to general education curriculum. Quality of academic programs would improve with more parent involvement.

My child had a very good first grade teacher at Averill. Needless to say as soon as my child was identified with a Special Need his second grade teacher was not willing to implement any accomodations and modifications in his General Education classroom. The easy solution for this school is to lump these kids in their Resource Room. The Principal was not supportive because she is to intimated by some of the tenure Teachers. The Principal is more political then Parent friendly. She is not capable of dealing with Parents who questions her staff. As a result of this experience my son will be repeating the second grade at a different school, although averill has promoted him to third grade. It alarms me that they are actually setting these special need kids up for failure by not promoting positive self esteem and recognizing that they are general education students first.

I removed my son from Averill after being enrolled for 6 months - From my short experience, I didn't like the way the staff interacted with the children. The teachers generally spent a lot of time disciplining children, they hadn't quite figured out 'how' to teach them, parent involvement was very low.
